Commercial New Construction — College of Charleston Sailing Center
Architect: Schmitt Sampson
Location: Patriots Point, Mount Pleasant
The J. Stewart Walker, Jr. Sailing Complex, is home to the College of Charleston sailing team. With more than 400 feet of floating dock space, the Cato Docks provide an abundance of space for the storage of boats. Amenities of the sailing center also include sail and storage bins, maintenance bays, a storage loft, and a tea room.
Due to the uniqueness of the project, there were many special considerations. The building was constructed on floating docks in the marina. Materials, equipment and tools were transported by barge as well as being hand delivered across the docks. Special techniques were also required for hoisting objects. Additionally, waterproofing and specialized exterior materials were implemented, and crews were required to wear life jackets due to the surrounding water.
