Medical Construction — MUSC GE Scanner
Architect: Stubbs Muldrow Herin Architects, Inc.
Location: Medical University of South Carolina
The GE Scanner is located on the third floor of the main hospital. The intended use of this room is for research purposes and will remain until the research project is complete. The GE Scanner provides cutting-edge technology, which could potentially replace all existing scanners in the hospital.
The work included new electrical, HVAC and plumbing. New floors and ceilings were also installed as part of the scope of work. The main obstacle encountered by the construction crew involved the location of the room in which the scanner was installed. Brain surgery is performed in very close proximity to the GE Scanner room, making the loud noises associated with construction, a major issue. The scheduling difficulties that resulted from this problem, limited the time that work could be preformed. Fortunately, Chastain Construction, Inc. was able to overcome the obstacles and complete the project on time and below cost.
